The Karpfenland Aischgrund is one of the most famous carp pond area in Germany. Named after the little river “Aisch”, we are located a short distance from the well-known cities Nürnberg and Bamberg.


In the very heart of the Karpfenland Aischgrund you will find over seven thousand, centuries-old fishponds, rare plants and animals. Whether it be our Franconian culinary specialties like the Aischgründer Carp, about a hundred horseradish growers or our historical towns, rest assured it will cast a spell on you. The Karpfenland Aischgrund cities Adelsdorf, Dachsbach,  Gremsdorf, Gutenstetten, Heroldsbach, Höchstadt a.d. Aisch, Ipsheim, Lonnerstadt, Marktbergel, Mühlhausen, Neustadt a.d. The Karpfenland Aischgrund has a rich tradition of carp fish farming. About a thousand pond farmers farm the famous Aischgrund carp in traditional methods: about 7185 ponds spread throughout the region. The Karpfenland Aischgrund carp fish farming tradition is a one-of-a-kind in Europe and has a significant cultural meaning and strong commercial relevance.

The Aischgründer Carp farming originates from medieval times, when monks possessed long belts of ponds, farming carps for the Lenten season.Today the Aischgründer Carp is a traditional specialty with a registered PGI (protected geographical indication) trademark and the most important fish of the local fish farming industry.

Germany´s stronghold of the carp farming industry lies here in the middle of Franconia. About a third of the Bavarian carp production comes from the Aischgrund.
